MOUSEÍO VIVLÍON Clifton Library
Objective
For our final project for second year studio we were to design a library for the young adult located in Clifton, Cincinnati (347 Ludlow Ave). Our library was to include seven sections of books, various service areas, private and public study rooms and labs, two egress staircases, and various other elements all being in ADA standards. |
Design
For my design, I thought of the idea of doing a "book library" due to a picture book precedent I had seen. I wanted the exterior of my building to be more playful and sculptural in which the facade represented a section of stacked books like one would find on a library shelf. I followed my precedents favorably and designed my exterior in such a way. For the interior, I focused largely on the average art museum. I wanted my interior to resemble a gallery in which the books were what was the displayed art. I came up with this idea due to my interest in museums along with my need to make my library modern but also sculptural. My interior is to be vastly white with an open layout, dividing walls, and few doors.

Context
Our library was given a site of 109'x48' in which were were to work with, given the front, west, and south facades to leave to our imagination (East to be flat due to boundary lines). In total our library could not be more than 66' tall, and no more than 1' widening per upper floors (progressive- 2nd floor could extend 1' out on three sides, 3rd floor extending 2', and so on)

Concept
Clifton can be best described as an up and coming development project focused on the young adult. The appearance is vastly art deco, moderne, and italianate with rich patternistic ornamentation and no two buildings alike. I was taken by this colorful strip and felt as if the streets were some sort of sacred display. With this thought in mind, I came across the idea of a library that could be on display as well. I would like to consider my design concept as a sort of picture book museum. I focused greatly on representing my facade as a stack of books for which I found a great precedent to support. As far as the interior goes, I would like the viewer to walk into a book museum. The interior with it’s white and minimal features is meant to represent the average art museum in which the books are the pieces of art. I picture open floor plans with modern furnishings and the shelves of books to hang on the walls like paintings. I also intend on having an art gallery as a special program area to focus in on the design ideas. In terms of placement, as one ascends the floor levels they will noticecommunial spaces transitioning into independed areas, but with an atrium to look upon the gallery from all floors, connecting the spaces to the main concept design of the library.

With all things in mind, I intended to design a library for the young adult signifying the importance of literature and all arts combined in a manner of public display and appreciation.
