Project 1a: Proportional Grids
For project series 1 of freshman year, we were to work on our craftsmanship, compostion, and overall design process. Objective Create eight perfect conpositions using a gridded layout and single black square We were to construct 8 11"x11" white squares and 8 1"x1" black squares in perfect orthagonal construction. Next we created perfect grids using ratios such as 1:1.5, 1:2, square root of 2, and the golden section. After all grids were lightly drawn, we were to place a single black square on each large square creating a perfect compostition. |
Project 1b: Composition as Selection
Objective Create compositions exemplyfying the following design terms: Repetition, hierarchy, symmetry, figure-ground, stasis, dynamic, rhythm, asymmetry For this portion of the project, we were to compose photographs of compositions illustrating the objective terms. After printed in black and white, we then traced over portions of each photo that strenghtened the basic compositional strategies. In total, we were left with 55 drawings. |
Composition ExercisesProject 1c: Composition as Intention
Objective Compose black elements on white bristol squares creating abstract orthogonal conpositions. For this project, we were to compose lines, squares, and rectangle shapes demonstrating: Line dominance composition (2), balance compositions (2), rhythm compositions (2), progression compositions(2), and proportional compositions (2). |
